Alligators
They sit on the road’s shoulder or sometimes in the driving lane. Steel jaws opened wide; razor sharp teeth gleaming in the sunlight. Roadside alligators – unsightly shreds or tire fragments.
Emergency
Flashing lights and blaring sirens signal an emergency. Cars stopped. No one moving. There is activity up ahead. Car doors open. Clusters begin to form. People emerge and see.
Uluru
Standing 1,142 feet high Uluru or Ayers Rock glows red at dawn and sunset. But this is not Uluru. It is just one fantastic quilt.
These are beautiful—and inspirational.I looked up “Sijo Poetry,” and after reading the definition, I’m giving it a try tomorrow. (Thank you, Poetry Foundation.) I doubt I’ll come up with anything as powerful as: “Steel jaws opened wide; razor sharp teeth gleaming in the sunlight./ Roadside alligators – unsightly shreds or tire fragments.”
Thanks for this!
You’re welcome. I first learned about Sijo at an NCTE session I attended in November.
Love NCTE Conventions! Baltimore was great. Houston was my all-time favorite!
I am impressed with your ability to create these poems with ease. The first one stands out as a beautiful descriptive poem. I agree with the above that the steel jaws line is impressive. I think you mentioned Sigo poetry in another slice. If you go to NCTE in November 2020, please let me know. I would love to meet you F-2-F.
Yes, I did. I like the style and format of it. At the moment I am not planning on going to NCTE this year, but who knows. Would love to meet if I go.
Great poems! Thanks for sharing the poems and a great writing idea!
You are welcome.
Gorgeous poetry with a touch of playfulness. 🙂
Thank you. I like the fun in this poetry format.
” Steel jaws opened wide; razor sharp teeth gleaming in the sunlight. ” oh now that is poetic. I like these sijo poems.
They kind of tell a story put together: tire fragments caused an accident. Ambulance delayed in traffic en route. Now home under a warm quilt dreaming of Ayers Rock.
Never made that connection. I was just trying to get something written for today.
I’d forgotten about sijo poetry! Bookmarking for an idea for later!
It really is a fun poem to write.
Good to read poetry on Friday. Thank you! And for the quilt art also.
You are welcome.
So much to love about your imagery, your word play. Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Amazing!!
Thanks
