We Are Now Yellow

Our county has moved into the yellow phase of reopening. What does that mean?

Well, we can now leave our house…but there is no place I want or need to go.

Churches are reopened…but I need to call to reserve a seat for Mass.

Dining in restaurants is allowed…but outside dining only.

Stores are open using CDC guidelines…but I don’t need anything.

For the last two plus months the only reason I had for leaving the house was for a weekly trip to the grocery store or to Wal Mart for a prescription refill. Throw in a doctor’s appointment and that was the extent of my traveling.

What was the result?  I saved money.  I don’t think I filled my car’s gas tank more than three times during these weeks.  Since I didn’t go shopping I have no new credit card bills.

What else happened?  I got outside and did some yard work.  I enjoy it.  Cutting the grass…weeding and cleaning up after the winter…planting seeds and bulbs…gives me a sense of accomplishment.

I also had time to start and finish some projects around the house.  Always a good feeling.

And let’s not forget the most important thing…there was more time to read.

  1. I haven’t filled up my gas tank since March! We are about to enter Phase 1 – just beginning to open up. Like you, I have grown accustomed to staying home and feel like I have no need to go anywhere except the grocery store.

  2. You made a good point. I spent very little money too but today came the eye doctor visit. I am now going to be facing a whopping charge for new lenses for my sunglasses. Your ending laugh was adorable. Enjoy the next new normal phase.

I started my blog post today with the news that our county, one that was holding at four cases, just experienced an outbreak at the seafood packaging plant, now nearing 150 casesI I abandoned it…couldn’t complete. Everything you say here is true! I do think we can all reprioritize. Certainly that’s one benefit, but until there is a vaccine, one step forward (maybe), two steps back. As always, the laugh is much needed and truly perfect.

  4. Ok so I am audio only. No hair cut since January. I to can not go places with no place to really go. I am not really ready to go to some places that are open and don’t really need anything. So I am happy in my garden.

    • I have a dentist appointment next weet. Since I will be in the chair anyway I wonder if she cuts hair as well as clean teeth. Maybe I will ask.

  5. Usually I talk myself out of impulse purchase, especially books! But since I’m ordering everything from home now I give into the impulse much too often. I’ve spent more than usual, especially on books!

  6. Yes! Just today I was reading an interesting article about 8 things that people discovered during covid that they want to hold onto (nature, baking bread and hobbies, buying less, etc). I know there are things about sheltering in place that I have truly appreciated and I hope to be more intentional about how I spend my time going forward.

    • I think we all learned a little bit about ourselves during this time. I think, maybe hope, that we have a better sense of what is important and what isn’t.
