Haunted House

I enjoy horror stories.  There is nothing like curling up with a good ghost story at night.  That doesn’t mean that I believe in ghosts because I don’t.  However, things have been happening around our house lately that make me question whether we have an entity residing with us.  Because of what has been happening, I can’t believe it is an evil spirit, more like a mischievous prankster.

How did I arrive at this conclusion?  Well, things have disappeared and I know it is not my old age mind not remembering where I put things.  Things have been found in rooms of the house where they do not belong and where neither Kathy nor I have placed them.  Strange sounds can be heard in different rooms of the house but no one is there when we go to investigate.

The other day we went to the store to do some grocery shopping.  Avocados were on sale so we bought two.  When we came home I placed them on the counter top behind a plastic container. The net day was garbage day so I went downstairs to the basement to get our bag of trash and put it out.  As I was walking down the stairs I noticed something dark on the floor.  I couldn’t imagine what it was so I went to investigate.  It was an avocado.  Someone or some thing must have carried that avocado down the steps.  What other explanation could there be?  Made me shiver.

We pay for our trash pick-up by the bag – $3.00 per bag.  I put the money in a plastic jar and leave the jar on the desk by the door so I can just pick it up and put it out with the trash the next day.  When I went to get the jar it was on the floor.  We just had a new door installed so I know there is no air leaking in that could have knocked the jar to the floor.  It had to be a ghost.  Gave me chills.

Sometimes in the middle of the night when I am sound asleep I am awakened by a strange noise.  I can’t even describe what it sounds like.  It gives me goosebumps.  Did I forget to lock the door?  Is someone in the house who shouldn’t be?  When I go to investigate the room is empty.  Sometimes I have even stepped into something wet and cold. I should not walk around bare footed at night.  I know there was nothing there when I went to bed.  Was it something the spirit left behind? Ugh!

Other times when I try to get out of bed I find myself unable to move.  It feels as if my legs are strapped down.  I find this unnerving because I can’t see anyone holding me down.  Maybe there is more than just one entity.  Now I’m worried.

Often I am in the kitchen by myself.  I decide it it time to get Kathy and myself a snack.  Just as I reach for something I get the sensation of something brushing against my ankles.  Our house is long.  There was no one in the kitchen with me so what am I feeling?  Nothing in this world can move that quickly can it?  Maybe we should move.

I find these experiences unsettling.  What am I do do about them?  Who do I call?  Ghostbusters?  Who is the prankster whose spirit is having fun at my expense?

I did some research to see if I can find out who is causing all this mayhem.  Looking at all of the facts I have come to a conclusion and am able to put a name to this mischievous being:  Dustin.

But he is not alone.  Others forces are working with him.  Further research leads me to believe one is named Ned.

I am convinced that the other one is female.  Her name is Molly.

I guess I could look into getting rid of these ghosts, but I don’t think I want to.  Life just wouldn’t be the same without them.

  1. Cute! Oh to have three ghosts a foot there must be some wild nights! Very fun!

  2. Too funny. I don’t have a ghost. I have a heat Vampire named Lucy. Any time I get up from a seat, my bed, etc, she moves right into the warm spot I have left behind.

Clever, clever “twisted” ending. It’s strange that yours should be my first “Slice” today. We have an appointment this morning to let go our most wonderful feline Jack, a feisty and steadfast ginger. I know I need to write about it, but I’m not ready yet. I wish I had a Ned, Dustin, or Molly to comfort me. Thank you for this.

    • So sorry to hear about Jack. As a pet owner I know that is one of the hardest decision one has to make. We have made it several times and it is never easy. Thoughts are with you.

  4. Ha! Ha! I thought perhaps your “ghosts” might have four legs and a long tail. They are sneaky, but lovable beings. 🙂

But how could any of those felines moved that jar? I guess if it’s plastic. . . You had me all the way! I’ve stayed at hotels here in Colorado that claim hauntings and I’m not sure I believe all the stories, but like yours, they do sound believable! Love reading what you’re investigating!

  6. I feel like my comment is about something kind of small, but you pay for your trash pickup by the bag? Who picks up your trash up there? (Clearly, it isn’t Penn Waste!)

    • Yeah, we have one independent trash collector here. Just got notice last week that there is a price increase from $3 to $4 per bag. This is the first increase we have had since we moved here 30 years ago.

Clever slice. I can remember all the spooky antics our cats pulled.

  8. Nice twist to the ending! We have had company for a 12 days, and our cat has lost her spot on the couch. She got it back today, so I think I will finally be able to sleep without her nightly reminder that she’s been displaced and isn’t happy about it!

  9. Loved your post – was really wondering how you’d get rid of those ghosts – only to see the lovely culprits. Definitely had me smiling!
