Although it seems like there is time I know it will be here before I know it. I have to be ready. It is not too soon to start. I am talking about our trip out west th attend our nephew’s wedding in Sonoma, California.
Last week Kathy and I stopped in the AAA office to start gathering some information. We spoke to the lady at the counter and she suggested that we go back to the map section and talk to Deb. That’s what we did.
We told Deb what we planned to do, but we had no idea as to where to begin or how to go about it. I did tell her that we would like to take the northern route out and then return by the southern route.
Deb got us a US map and we checked highways. We all agreed that the most direct way to get out would be to travel Interstate 80. That goes right to where we need to be.
Coming home Deb suggested we take I-40 and hook up with I-83. That looks good to me. Deb then asked us where we would like to stop along the way. She said that they could and would make arrangements for us. My answer was that we didn’t know because we don’t know what kinds of attractions, if any, are along the way.
To help us out Deb gave us maps of all of the state’s we would be passing through along the northern route. She suggested we look them over and then come back with a plan. Triple A would then map out the route for us. This is what we are now in the process of doing. When we go back with our plans we can pick up maps for the trip home and start the process again.

I love planning a road trip! Though I’ve gotten so I usually just rely on Google to get me there. I was very pleased with the back roads Google found for me to get to Minnesota this past week. Got to drive through some gorgeous scenery! It’s very helpful to have the extra state maps with more detail–that way you can find the neat stuff to stop at.
We actually did check Google for sights to see along the way. Now I just need to come up with a plan.
This is exactly how my dad would’ve planned a road trip, getting the maps from AAA. He loved a good road trip, and there is a simple pleasure in perusing fold-out maps when you are planning a trip or sitting in the car. I hope you have a fun trip!
I agree. There is something about holding a map and being able to read it. Kathy is usually my navigator and she lets me know when things are coming up that I need to be on the lookout for.
So many different attractions in each state. This land that we call home has so much beauty and diversity. Happy planning – it’s almost as much fun going on the trip.
How true. We do live in a country rich in things to see and do.
It’s always better to be prepared, but there is fun in the random stops too. The internet sure makes planning and hotel reservations so much easier nowadays.
It is amazing the kinds of information you can find on the internet and the reservations you can make. My problem with making hotel reservations for this trip is that I am not sure how much driving I will get done in a day. I know I would rather underestimate my distance per day than overestimate and be too tired to drive those last fifty miles.
I used to love planning trips via AAA and still prefer paper maps to online (although I am a poor navigator in any case). Your trip sounds like it will be lots of fun! You are being very planful.
That is why Kathy is my navigator. I just turn when she tells me to.
I did this trip years ago with a friend and her 5 children! We had no plan except to get to our destination. We are both from the Salt Lake City area, so that’s where we were headed. We stayed on the highway almost the whole time. It was a long trip, but fun. I should do it again some time. It’s great that AAA still offers this service for people.

Great planning! We’ve used CAA many times – and their routes & info have always worked well. They even highlighted where there most likely would be police, construction and tolls. Have a wonderful trip!

A road trip, what fun! A friend and I drove from New York City to Los Angeles right after college, and I’ve always meant to do this again. Looking forward to reading about your adventures!

I love planning a trip and AAA’s triptiks are amazing. I used one driving from Toronto to Portland, Oregon. Your cross country trip will be amazing and great inspiration for writing.

Think about stops to “meet and eat” with fellow slicers on your route! It’s always fun to meet friends we know from writing, reading, and commenting.
Indianapolis has some great restaurants and interesting places to visit!
It would be great to be able to hook up with some sliders along the way. Will have to see what happens.
