I had Great Hopes

SOLSC Day 19

I had great hopes.

I sat with my friends.

Each of us wondering

When will it be my turn?

When will someone come for me?

Take me home?

Make me their own?

I had great hopes.

Finally someone is looking.

They spot me.

They check out my friends.

They come back to me.

I had great hopes.

Yes!  They want me.

I have a family.

I am so happy.

My friends are happy for me.

I wish them well as I leave.

I had great hopes.

I will make my people glad they chose me.

I will do what they want me to do.

I will not cause problems, sputter, or balk.

I will show others in the neighborhood how good I am.

I had great hopes.

I wait.

I wait.

I’ve been waiting.

Maybe today.

I’ve been here for months

Sitting here whiling away the hours,

The days,

The months.

Nothing happens.

I had great hopes.

I look out the window.

Yes!  It’s snowing.

Maybe today I will get to show my gratitude.

I plead.

I can do it.

Give me the chance.

I had great hopes.

No!

It can’t be!

The snow has stopped!

I want to cry.

I had great hopes.

It’s snowing again.

This is the fourth time this season.

I should be excited,

but after so many disappointments

how can I be?

Hopes fizzle.

I had great hopes.

I heard them talking.

A nor’easter.

Heading this way tomorrow and Wednesday.

Forecast for significant accumulation.

Dare I hope?

I have great hopes

  1. I was thinking you got a new cat!

  2. I’m with Adrienne. I thought you were some place with cats and one just begged you for a home. I knew it was not a dog . . . Just right snowblower snow is an interesting phenomenon! 🙂

  3. You are a tricky fellow! I too thought, another pet? Then the laugh erupted when I got to the photo. I hope your friend won’t be needed, but it sure is nice to have, just in case.

  4. I had no clue until I read the comments above, haven’t seen snow for years (and haven’t missed it either)! Sure hope he gets parked in the shed sooner rather than later…

  5. Alice Nine

I see you have a new “toy.” I can’t believe it! Are we naming these storms… Well, I guess they are — #4, right? Really cute poem. Love the voice in it and the use of repetition.

  6. I am absolutely laughing out loud. I thought it was a dog until I got down to the “fourth time this season.” Haha! I love this. Now I know why we didn’t get any snow – you jinxed us by purchasing a new snow blower. We did that a few years ago, after the 29 inch storm… Then didn’t use it for a few years.

  7. Suspense til, the end – I was sure there was new puppy to be revealed. Well done Bob!

  8. Oh goodness, you insane man you! I thought you were getting another pet for a moment then. Nicely done!
