34 and Counting

On Saturday, Kathy and I celebrated our 34 wedding anniversary.  I find it hard to believe that it has been that long.  It sure doesn’t seem it.  To celebrate, we decided to go out for dinner on Friday since Saturday is church day and we usually dine at the exclusive Burger King with some friends after Mass.

Friday we were both hungry for some French food.  After some discussion, we decided to go to one of our favorite places to eat.  It is not exactly a French restaurant, but they did have what we craved.  We went to Perkins where we each had Ooh-La-La French Toast.  Now I ask you, does cuisine get more French than that?  It really was delicious and just what we were both in the mood for.

This is just a little side trip from what I really wanted to write about today.  I was thinking back to 34 years ago and how our wedding went.  I admit that some people, Kathy included< weren’t sure I would be there for the ceremony.  It is not because I didn’t love her – I did and still do.  It was because I was sick.

Both Kathy and I decided to just take a personal day on Friday and Monday since both of us were teachers.  Well, Monday I woke up with a cold.  I couldn’t breathe and felt rotten. I decided to stay home from school.  I spent the day curled up on the sofa drinking plenty of liquids and taking aspirin for the aches.  I went to bed early hoping a good night’s sleep would have me feeling better Tuesday.  It didn’t.

I decided to stay home on Tuesday as well.  I had to be better for Saturday.  Tuesday was a repeat of Monday.  I knew that I had to go into school on Wednesday or else I wold need a doctor’s excuse.  I didn’t want to go to the doctor.

Wednesday I did go to school.  Of course I took a lot of ribbing from my colleagues about getting cold feet or just staying home to get ready for the wedding.  I somehow made it through the day, but felt lousy.  So, I stayed home on Thursday as well.  Since I went to school on Wednesday I knew I wouldn’t need an excuse because I already had Friday and Monday off as personal days.

Friday I did start to feel better and by Saturday morning I was fine which is good since my friend and i were up at 6:00 to decorate the cars.  I did make it to the wedding.

Now, her we are 34 years later, older and grayer (at least me) and still extremely happy.
