The Housekeeper

With Christmas fast approaching there is a flurry of activity around our house.  Decorations to put up, packages to wrap, and cookies to bake.  With all that there is to do sometimes the regular cleaning gets put on the back burner.  It is at times like these that I am glad we have a cleaning person – a luxury I know.  Anyway, this week I thought I would take the time to write something that would honor her.

The Housekeeper

 She saunters into the room

surveying what needs to be done.

Where should she start?

The computer stand?  The dining room table?

The table it is.

A fortune cookie from last night’s dinner

hides inconspicuously behind a tissue box.

She sees it.

In one fluid motion the cookie and box are knocked to the floor.

She jumps down from the table after the cookie,

her cleaning responsibilities forgotten for the moment.

Her paw bats the cookie again

sending it across the floor.

Because it is lightweight,

it travels far.

She pounces, landing on the cookie

crumbling it inside its cellophane wrapper.

Enough fun.  Time to get back to work.

Back up on the table she looks around.

Is that a pen near the edge?

Something else that can be knocked off and played with.

As did the fortune cookie,

the pen makes a nice toy.

Maybe one day she will even learn to write.

Back to cleaning.

On the table again she spies a pile of mail,

read but just left there.

This pile doesn’t just get swatted.

Using her nose as a plow

she pushes the stack onto the floor.

Now the table is cleared.

Won’t they be pleased when they get up?

Who needs Merry Maids

when you have Molly the Housekeeper?

  1. What a lovely surprise! Molly the Merry Maid 🙂

  2. She’s definitely a maid… and at the fraction of the cost!

  3. Ha! Ha! You are too funny! Here I was thinking, yes, a cleaning person is such a luxury, but what a treat. Then I find out that this cleaning being actually causes more cleaning to be done. Happy Holidays to you, your wife, and the cleaning cats! 🙂

  4. I think this is the second time you’ve got me. Very nicely done.
